you can’t steer a train

The New York whirlwind weekend seems to have sprouted wings! It just so happens that Dances Of Vice is throwing a party the Saturday we’re there, Enchantment Under The Sea, a 50’s prom themed gala at Morningside Castle, and then the Coilhouse crew has just scheduled their Black & White & Red All Over Fundraising Ball for the Sunday! Given that I planned this about as carefully as a drunken carpenter, this is brilliant luck. Apparently there couldn’t be better timing!

Today’s other good news: I’ve scored a ride to Burning Man with my friend Jordan.

PDF Back Issues of Coilhouse Magazine ON SALE NOW

If you’ve ever wanted to enjoy a DRM free, high resolution, portable version of Coilhouse on your e-reader, you’ll enjoy having these.”

Help Coilhouse Win a Small Business Grant!

mostly via Nadya:

Guys, Coilhouse Magazine needs your help! Basically, here’s the deal: we’ve entered the magazine into a competition for a $100K business grant that we feel we have a real shot at winning. My knee-jerk reaction to all contests, sweepstakes and competitions is that they’re all scams. But this one actually sounds promising, and if we won, it would change everything for us. As a small business, it’s hard for us to keep going in this economy, but this could give us the boost we need to really take Coilhouse to the next level.

It literally takes 60 seconds to help out here. You just have to register (they won’t spam you.. unlike me) and vote (it takes 1 click).

STEP ONE: Go here to register. I know, registering is super-annoying. This one’s relatively painless. Don’t worry about spam – they explicitly say “we will not solicit your email for special offers, product news or other communications.”

STEP TWO: Go to our entry. Click on “Support This Story, ENDORSE NOW.”

STEP THREE (BONUS ROUND!): If you really, REALLY want to support us and take one extra step, get the word out! Let people know we need support. Post this link on Facebook, Twitter, your blog, or whatever.

Please, please take a minute to vote for us. We’re really serious about winning this thing, and every vote counts. Thank you!

COILHOUSE 3 is on sale now!

COILHOUSE, the smoothly wicked paper-child of Nadya, Zoetica, and darling Mer, is now selling Issue 3!

Today, to celebrate, they’ve posted a tour of the magazine, which includes such treats as Xeni Jardin riding a unicorn, a searing collection of photographs from the Kowloon Walled City, and a Brief Tour of Pre-War Russian Pulp by author Jess Nevins.

I can’t even pretend I’ve the extra money, but I’ve already bought my copy. It’s the only magazine I buy. I love COILHOUSE like I loved Mondo 2000, not only as a beautiful magazine stuffed with the sort of fascinating ideas that help shape our culture into more what I want it to be, but also as a lovingly crafted, stylish, sleek, and super sexy art object d’fetish. They’re so pretty I leave them conspicuously out when I am done reading them, solid space advertising, so guests to my home will see them and take note.

Also, for the hardcore fan, which I can not afford to be, they also have t-shirts and stickers.

COILHOUSE: for sale

Coilhouse Magazine, Issue 01 is finally here!
I bought one, have you?

from thier site, emphasis mine:

“Get ready for 96 glossy, full-color pages of art, photography, music, fashion and literature. In this issue, the stark android beauty created by Andy Julia for our cover is counterbalanced inside by his elegant portfolio of vintage-style nudes. Coilhouse travels to Ljubljana, Slovenia (literally! we actually went!) to interview Laibach, while singer Jarboe tells war tales from her career post-Swans. Photographer Eugenio Recuenco contributes a lush 10-page portfolio and interview, while Clayton James Cubitt delivers a poignant, visceral spread (again, literally) on the topic of genital origami. Renowned science fiction author Samuel R. Delany shares an exclusive excerpt from his forthcoming novel, “From the Valley of the Nest of Spiders,” while our first installment of “All Yesterday’s Parties” digs up forgotten party photos from eras long gone, starting with London’s Slimelight circa ‘95. Fans of WZW and Z!ST will love Zo’s fashion pictorial, in which she reconstructs a Galliano outfit on a budget. Pop-surrealist Travis Louie gives us a glimpse of his inner monster, and cult painter Saturno Butto has some medical fun at the expense of Catholics everywhere. All this, and much more – including supervillain how-to’s, Coilhouse paper dolls, interviews, fashion and art await.

Readers of the blog, we have another treat just for you: the fact that the version of the magazine that you are buying here today will not be available in stores. Coilhouse will be in stores this fall, it won’t be the unique version that’s available here. On this site, and on this site only, you can get the uncensored edition. This version includes a powerful piece that was too risqué for stores to accept without problems due to the graphic (and in our opinion, beautiful) images involved. Only 1000 copies of this very limited version exist – a mere fraction of the entire print run. And that version is only available here, on this site. When we run out, we’ll start selling the censored version that will also be available in stores – so get the limited edition copy that we call the “true version of the magazine” while we still have them!”

My deepest and most sincere congratulations to Mer, Nadya, Mildred and Zoe.

I have an inspiring announcement to make!

Three dear and glorious women

– musician Meredith Yayanos, artist Zoetica Ebb and photographer Nadya Lev

are launching a new magazine!

COILHOUSE is a love letter to alternative culture, written in an era when alternative culture no longer exists. And because it no longer exists, we take from yesterday and tomorrow, from the mainstream and from the underground, to construct our own version. We cover art, fashion, technology, music and film to create an alternative culture that we would like to live in, as opposed to the one that’s being sold or handed down to us. The result, in the form of articles, features and interviews, is laid out on our blog and in our print magazine for all to see. If our Utopia is your Utopia, then welcome! Anyone can contribute, and we encourage you to go to our submission page and get in touch..

We will also have guest writers, and we welcome comments and submissions! We’re don’t yet have a release date for Issue 1, but it will be soon, and you will know about it. To tide you over in the meantime, blog posts will be a-plenty!”

Please visit COILHOUSE and get involved! If you like it, SPREAD THE WORD! They place great emphasis and importance on the process of sharing and collaboration, so feel free to repost any and all pertinent information elsewhere. Especially the flyer here or the one found here.
